Controls (30 cm orange and white nylon flags with manual punches) will be set up throughout the forest and marked on detailed maps indicating topography, various land features, and some vegetation. The goal is to find as many controls in the allotted time using only the map and a compass. Controls are given point values based on difficulty in locating/reaching and/or distance from home base. Late penalties are assessed for any minute (or fraction thereof) over the time limit. Map scale will be 1:10,000. The course will be printed on three 13×19 sheets.
Each control will have a set of clues to entries in an orienteering-themed crossword puzzle. Each correct filled in square of the puzzle gives you an added chance to win, by random drawing, a gift certificate. The crossword puzzle is voluntary and separate from the scoring of the rogaine.
The event window runs from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm, by which time all competitors must be back at home base. Within that window, you arrive when you want, study the map (will be given out at check-in) for as long as you want, and start when you are ready. Your start time will be noted. You have 4, 7, or 10 hours from that time to return without penalty (but before 6:30 pm). Drinks, fruit and snacks will be available throughout the day. Water, in gallon jugs and bottled, will be available at home base, along with hand sanitizer. A wrap will be provided after your event.
